Chicago Ballot

Judges up for retention

60 judges are on every Cook County ballot, in Chicago and the suburbs (1 Appellate, 59 Circuit). Each needs at least 60% Yes to keep their seat (Illinois Constitution, Art. VI, Sec. 12). The Yes and No numbers shown are from Chicago ballots; suburban Cook ballots may number them differently. Judges in DuPage, Kane, Kendall, Lake, McHenry and Will counties aren't covered yet.

John J. Mahoney: Withdrew in September. The Board left this judge's ballot numbers (247-248) unused, so the name isn't on Chicago ballots. Some guides still list this judge. Chicago Board of Elections ↗

Where the ratings come from. Fourteen bar groups screen these judges: the 13 members of the Alliance of Bar Associations for Judicial Screening and the Chicago Bar Association. We show each group's own rating, taken from its own publication. This guide doesn't rate judges.

A group rates a judge who skips its screening “Not Recommended,” so a No can also mean the judge didn't take part.

Bar groups recommend nearly every sitting judge. This year 4 of 60 got any “No.” Open a judge to see what the evaluators wrote, including concerns behind a “Yes,” and anything a newsroom or official record reported.
